What is BOTOX®?
BOTOX® is a purified protein produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacterium that has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use as a cosmetic enhancing agent. When small amounts of this protein are injected into localized areas under the surface of the skin, the muscles that cause crows feet, frown lines, and forehead lines are relaxed allowing the skin above to lie smoothly and naturally, softening the appearance of lines and wrinkles and, in many cases, making them disappear completely.
Are BOTOX® Injections safe?
BOTOX® injections have been approved for use as a cosmetic treatment by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and has been used successfully as a wrinkle-reducing therapy for more than five years. Because very small amounts of BOTOX® is precisely injected in localized areas during each treatment, no serious side effects occur. Some patients may experience temporary bruising or tenderness at the treated site.
Who is a candidate for BOTOX®?
BOTOX® injections are an ideal option for those who want to reduce the look of fine lines and wrinkles around their eyes, mouth, and on their forehead and may not need or cannot afford a more invasive, surgical solution. While BOTOX® cannot treat sagging skin that requires treatment through a face or brow lift, its effects can produce a dramatic improvement in your appearance, making you look younger and more vibrant almost immediately.
Although it has not been linked to the occurrence of birth defects or other serious side effects, BOTOX® injections are not recommended for women who are pregnant or for those with neurological disorders.
How long do results last?
Unfortunately, the effects of BOTOX® Injections are temporary. The good news is you can enjoy a rejuvenated and more youthful appearance for three to six months as a result of each treatment. In some cases, the effects of BOTOX® may last longer after several treatments have been administered.
How long does the procedure take?
The BOTOX® injections are a simple and quick procedure that can be done easily during your lunch hour or between other appointments. Depending on the number of sites you would like to have treated, treatment may last between 20-45 minutes. After treatment, most patients find that they can immediately return to their normal, day-to-day activities.
Are BOTOX® Injections painful?
Patients may experience a slight burning or pinching sensation during the injections and some temporary tenderness in the treated area following the procedure. The use of a topical anesthetic and a cooling compress are available to help relieve any discomfort you may experience before and after treatment.
