Spray-On Tanning

Spray-on tanning is an ideal way to achieve a sun-kissed glow without putting your body at risk. Sun damage can prematurely age your skin and UV exposure can lead to skin cancer.  For many years, tanning beds were thought to be safer than traditional sunbathing. Recent studies have shown, however, that tanning beds and commercial sun lamps may increase the risk of developing melanoma. Tanning beds and sun lamps primarily emit ultraviolet-A radiation, deeply penetrating radiation that has shown links to the development of malignant melanoma. Each year, an estimated 40,000 new cases of melanoma will be diagnosed while more than 7,000 people will die from this cancer.

Spray-On Tanning at Persona is a safe, natural alternative to sunbathing and tanning beds.  Dihydroxyacid (DHA) is the tanning agent that causes the skin to become bronzed when applied.  At Persona, our airbrush application utilizes DHA 20, the most natural tanning agent on the market today.  DHA 20 is derived from sugar beets.  It is combined with purified water and a salt bronzer so that when applied to the skin, it is not vulnerable to degradation and, thus, has a longer-lasting effect.  In addition, as opposed to synthetically manufactured DHA products, DHA 20 does not contain alcohol and therefore does not dry out or irritate the skin.

Before your session:

1. Prior to your tanning session, exfoliate your skin. A body scrub or exfoliating sponge will help to cleanse the skin thoroughly, removing dead skin cells, to ensure complete and even skin penetration of the tanning product.
2. On the morning of your session do not apply any moisturizer, lotion, deodorant, or makeup as they prevent the tanning product from being absorbed by your skin.
3. It is best to shave at least 8 hours before your session.  
4. Wear loose clothing and sandals or flip-flops to your session. You may choose to wear old or darker clothing in the event that some residue from the tanning product rubs off as it dries onto the skin.

After your session:

1. We recommend that you wait 8 to 12 hours before taking a shower.  The tanning product requires adequate time to take effect and early exposure to water may wash the product off before the reaction is complete.
2. After showering, use a gentle patting motion to dry your skin rather than rubbing it.
3. One of the most important ways to maintaining your tan is to keep your skin hydrated. Moisturizing your skin after you shower in the morning and before bed at night will help to ensure the health and vitality of your skin as well as the even tone of the tan.
4. Avoid exfoliating products until you are ready for another tanning session. These types of products include body scrubs and sponges, products containing alpha hydroxy and glycolic acids, and products containing mineral oils. All of these products will cause your tan to fade faster.
5. Long baths, extended periods spent in a swimming pool or sauna, and strenuous exercise that causes excessive perspiration will decrease the effectiveness of your spray-on tan. Exposure to water and excessive sweating will soften your skin, causing quicker exfoliation, which will ultimately shorten the life of your tan.
