Wrinkle Relaxers
Wrinkle Relaxers
While Botox has become synonymous with “wrinkle relaxers,” it is just one of several brands of wrinkle relaxers on the market. All of these popular nonsurgical treatments contain botulinum toxin type A as their active ingredient and work by temporarily relaxing facial muscles to soften wrinkles. However, their formulations differ to meet different needs and purposes.
At Persona™ Med Spa, we offer a range of wrinkle relaxers to our Houston clients, including Botox, Dysport and Xeomin. This allows us to tailor your treatment to suit your unique needs and expectations, which we will discuss in detail during your consultation.
What Are Wrinkle Relaxers?
Also called neuromodulators, neurotoxins or anti-wrinkle injections, wrinkle relaxers are cosmetic injections used to soften the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. They are injected directly into facial muscles, where they block nerve impulses to cause temporary muscle relaxation. The active ingredient responsible for this action is botulinum toxin type A, a neurotoxic protein produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacterium.
While injecting toxins into facial muscles may sound like an odd way to improve your appearance, the amounts used for cosmetic purposes are too small to cause serious problems. Botox and other injectables in this category have been studied extensively and used safely by medical providers for many years. They consistently rank at the top of most-requested nonsurgical cosmetic procedures worldwide.
It's easy to see why these treatments are so popular. They are quick, relatively painless and require little to no downtime. Most clients notice initial results within a week, with the full effect becoming visible two weeks post-treatment. The results from wrinkle relaxers last several months. Maintenance injections two to three times per year sustain your results indefinitely.
What do Wrinkle Relaxers Treat?
Wrinkle relaxers are commonly used to diminish the appearance of wrinkles in the upper face, such as:
- Glabellar lines (also called frown lines or “elevens”)
- Worry lines or horizontal forehead creases
- Crow’s feet around the eyes
In addition to softening existing wrinkles, wrinkle relaxers can also be used preventively, i.e., to stop wrinkles in their tracks. The terms "preventative Botox" or "baby Botox" are often used to describe this type of treatment.
Wrinkle Relaxers at Persona™
At our Houston medical spa, we offer wrinkle relaxers as an option for clients concerned about dynamic wrinkles in the upper face. We may suggest a specific brand of wrinkle relaxer or a combination of brands based on your unique concerns and goals. The following brands are available at Persona™:
Botox Cosmetic
A household name in the U.S., Botox has become synonymous with wrinkle relaxing. This is the first injectable wrinkle relaxer on the market, first introduced for therapeutic purposes in 1989 and later FDA-approved for the cosmetic treatment of wrinkles in 2002.
Botox is FDA-approved to temporarily diminish moderate to severe frown lines, forehead lines and crow’s feet. It delivers predictable and subtle results that will make you look like you, only younger.
The results become noticeable within a week and take full effect after about two weeks. Results last three to four months on average, but this varies from client to client.
Dysport
Dysport is another FDA-approved treatment intended to soften frown lines, the two vertical lines that appear between the brows. Dysport has a slightly different formulation from Botox.
The product is more diluted than Botox, which allows it to spread more easily over a larger surface area. This can make it a more efficient choice for addressing larger treatment areas. Dysport also produces faster results in some clients. As far as the longevity of results is concerned, the two treatments are quite similar. Dysport lasts three to four months for most clients.
Xeomin
For those with allergies to ingredients in other wrinkle relaxers, Xeomin may be the perfect alternative. This prescription injectable is highly purified and does not contain unnecessary proteins. The producers of Xeomin double filter this injectable with a proprietary XTRACT Technology™ process.
Xeomin is FDA-approved to temporarily improve the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines and forehead lines in adults. Results appear a week after treatment and typically last up to four months.
